Week 11 Blog

In fifty years from now, digital citizenship will be more advanced that anyone would have thought.

In reference to the Digital Citizenship's website and the nine themes of digital citizenship, I have made predictions of what each element will be like in fifty years from now.

Digital Access- I believe the access to technology and the internet will be made very accessible in the future. I predict that prices will be more affordable than they are now and that there will be more inventions like complete waterproof devices, unbreakable devices, foldable pocket-size devices, public devices. The long line of new inventions will make accessing internet etc possible anywhere for anyone.

Digital Commerce- Online banking and spending will become a lot more secure in the future. Today there are a lot of scams going around pretending to be AIB etc and scamming people. I predict in the future these frauds will be easily tracked down and it will no longer happen making online spending and banking safer. Online is becoming very popular for shopping as it has more of a selection than what most physical shops have. Selling goods is a growing trend now on platforms like Depop and Adverts but there are many fraudulent people on these apps. As stated, I believe online fraud will be stopped with advanced technology by fifty years time.

Digital Communication & Collaboration- Online is a great place for community around the world but it has its pros and cons. I predict that in the future, the sharing of information between people will be monitored and safer. It is very easy to forward on messages and images without the owners consent but this may not be the case in the future. Sharing information may be secured by requesting it from the owner and they will have to accept, I believe this is much better and will create a better atmosphere online. They should also be monitored for inappropriate or harmful content.

Digital Etiquette- I believe in the future, people will be a lot more caring and mindful online. In the future, education will incorporate online etiquette into their essential teaching and people will be more educated on how harmful online trolling and bullying is. The thought process of commenting, texting and posting will be different as people will be more aware.

Digital Fluency- Unlike today, I see everyone being digitally literate. Today there are many people (mainly elders) who can't quite get the hang of smart phones and laptops. Because of my generation being young when these era rose, we will adapt to new technology easier.

Digital Health & Welfare- I believe future digital citizenship will be better for people's wellbeing than it is today. There are many people out there effected badly by online from things like cyber bullying and trolling but find it hard to disconnect themselves. I believe future citizenship will not have any tolerance for this behaviour and there will be advanced technology to stop these incidents happening. I predict there will be a way to shut down accounts who target people and that there will be a filter or some sort of tool that does not allow hurtful phrases or comments. This will make the health and wellbeing of people online safe.

Digital Law-  Similar to the previous element, I predict law and serious action taken on matters like cyberbullying and trolling. In the physical world in Ireland, bullying has been passed as an offence which is a start for the deeper laws to be made online. Making fake accounts, typing harmful/hurtful words will not be possible to do, so I believe. There are many people out there fighting for legal action to be applied to the online world and I can see it becoming a law. People's mental wellbeing is important and is easily effected online.

Digital Rights & Responsibility- I predict people in the future will be a lot more educated and aware online of their rights and responsibilities. People will know when something is right or wrong online. I do hope that in the future we become more brave and help one and other in situations and stand up for whats right.

Digital Security & Privacy- I predict in that future digital citizenship will be a very safe space. In the present day, it is not the safest it could be. Experiencing fraud, hacking, viruses, cyberbullying, online robbery etc is very common and I do see a stop to it some day. With future technology and future common sense, people won't be doing these wrongful actions and will not be able to.
