week 7 Blog

In last week's class we discussed the idea of online personas and our consciousness. This topic was very interesting to look at in detail. Although it is something that I have been in conversations about before, it was interesting to read about it and talk about it with someone like John who is very educated in it.

My online persona would probably exist mostly on Instagram as I don't have Facebook or Twitter. On Instagram, online personas are created through the images you share and what captions you put with them. Online personas are also given through direct messages with people.

In terms of my personal online persona, I would say I don't change much to how I am in real life. I don't post a whole lot on Instagram about myself, to be honest it's mainly my dog that I post. So in a way, my online persona may be a crazy dog lover! I also like to share music from time to time on Instagram so people may perceive me by my music taste which would be hard to do as I have such a broad taste. One day I will post The Rolling Stones and the next day it could be Kanye West.

When messaging online, it is very different to speaking to someone in person and there are things that are easier to say over text rather than in person. When it's people I don't know and it's our first time talking, I always try and be as pleasant as possible. I am a friendly person and I always try to portray that in my online persona. Texting online is where people would get a real taste of what you are like but I don't talk to people I don't know online so what people perceive of me is what they see on my posts and stories.

Like most people, I wouldn't share pictures of me looking my worst but I don't always look my best either. I don't try to make my persona look any better than I do on the day to day basis.

So in conclusion, I try and maintain my online persona to as close to myself in real life as I can. I personally don't believe I portray anything far from myself online but who know, others may not think that. This could come down to a point made in Daniel Dennett's discussion with Closer To Truth on YouTube where they discuss the idea of one having two personalities and they might not even know.
